What is the best lunch box for a kindergartener?

Are bento lunch boxes actually leakproof?
The good ones are, but check whether the seal is per-compartment or just around the lid. Yumbox seals each compartment individually; most others seal only the outer lid, which is fine for dry food and risky for yoghurt.
Plastic or stainless steel?
Steel doesn't stain, hold smells or warp in a dishwasher, and lasts years longer. It's heavier and roughly a third more expensive, so it makes more sense from about age eight.
